Derwent Water

Derwent Water Workshop

Spend the morning exploring the secluded bays along the western shore of Derwent Water.

Meeting Point: The parking area to the north of Catbells.

Route: 4 miles with 100m of ascent

From the meeting point the route follows the tarmac road to the Hawes End Outdoor Centre and then on to Otterbield Bay.

As well as its famous tree which grows sideways out of the rock, Otterbield also boasts fabulous views across Derwent Water towards the town of Keswick.

From here the route follows the line of the shore south to Victoria Bay before winding its way as far as Abbott's Bay on the edge of Manesty Park. There is much to photograph along the way, including the jetty at Lower Brandelhow and Otter Island.

The route back to the car park passes throught the ancient woodland of Brandelhow Park which boasts an impressive variety of trees including some magnificent Douglas fir.
